Ubuntu app center icon mysteriously changes

New Ubuntu App Center icon

El app Center Ubuntu has changed its clothes. That was the name they decided use already in Ubuntu 23.10, although its original name in English is Apps Center. Staying with “Snap Store” does not seem good for marketing, and what better time to change the name than when a totally different store has been used that has also used another software development kit (Flutter). The thing is that at the moment it is not known if it is a mistake or a change.

The first time I saw it was in my installation of Ubuntu Daily, now in version 24.04. He new icon It is the one shown on the right with a black background, and the one in the Snap Store/Apps Center/Application Center was like the one on the left until a few hours ago. The fact that the one with the letter A in white looks blurrier is a matter of how I obtained the images; Use your imagination to try to see it more clearly.

App Center with icon redesign

The only information I have found about this change is a user asking about it in the Ubuntu Discourse. In the thread, this person wonders what could have happened, that in her case she was playing some of the songs and suddenly she saw it like that. The only response she has received is for him to try deleting multiple files with the command rm -rf ~/.local/share/mime ~/.local/share/.icons ~/.cache and restart, but I have tested in a Live Session of Ubuntu 23.10 taking advantage of what it offers DistroSea and I have been able to verify that the icon changes when updating the snap package (sudo snap refresh to update them all) from the Application Center.

Therefore, pending confirmation by its developers, the application will have a new icon in Ubuntu 24.04, although it has been brought forward and is now available in 23.10. If it is a mistake, it would make sense that the Daily update had been sneaked into the current stable, but I am inclined to think that it is a design change. I like it more. And to you?
