DistroSea: test Linux distributions from the browser, "heir" of DistroTest

DistroSea, testing elementaryOS inside the Vivaldi browser

Among Linux users there are two words that tend to sound a lot: distro hopping. If they are not mentioned directly, it is often said that we have tried a distribution, then we went to another, then another... We try distributions (distro) hoping (hopping) to find the best one for us. I think in most cases we are looking for something that works on our computer, but we can also look for something with a default design that we like. If we are in the second group, DistroSea It will make things much easier for us.

It would not be fair if I did not say that I have discovered this service reading through the blogosphere. DistroSea is something you will find family member who has already tried DistroTest, now no longer available, but, if memory serves me correctly, it has a more careful design. And I don't know it took much. DistroSea displays the options on a wall made up of the logos of what's available, while DistroTest it displayed a list and everything as if it hadn't received a review since… ever. It is also true that DistroTest had many more operating systems and variants available.

DistroSea allows you to test 39 distributions

Página principal

Right now, the list of available distros amounts to 39. In it we find the most popular distributions, such as the 9 official flavors of Ubuntu that existed until Cinnamon and Edubuntu arrived. We also find Arch Linux, elementary OS (header capture), Fedora or Debian.

And about the operation, we can say little that is not to go forward: there is a search box, but since right now there are "few" options, see the quotes, we can scroll up / down and find the logo of what we want to test . We click on one and it will start the test in full screen. It is like that of a video, and if we want to exit we have to press Esc, but we must know that the edges are likely to fail. I don't know if it was my browser, I don't know if it's usual, but I couldn't exit elementary OS from the shutdown button because the pointer became the pointer of the host system and it wouldn't allow me to click.

In any case, if this happens, and since it does not allow you to go back from the navigation button, we can always go to the URL, delete everything behind the domain and press enter.

Note: it is not a real system

It doesn't seem the most likely to me, but if anyone is thinking that these demos are useful for using a complete operating system, forget it; we can't even connect to the internet. They are more to see than anything else, and it can be used to take screenshots of an operating system, something for which I come to download complete ISOs, and little else. The performance is not comparable to that offered by a real installation, and it will not help us to know if a distribution behaves well on our hardware simply because it is in our browser.

With all this clear, the website is this.
