This extension for Ubuntu will allow you to stack windows in a similar way to how Plasma 5.27 does.

Extension to stack windows in ubuntu

Being able to stack things on an operating system is the new “dark theme” or “flat icons”. There are moments in which a function begins to spread and become fashionable, and it seems that the next one is to be able to stack the windows. Vivaldi went ahead, like him, by allowing us to stack tabs in his browser, but window managers like i3wm or Sway have always allowed it. In Windows 11, Microsoft added the option, and KDE He hurried up to introduce something similar in Plasma. Soon it will also be possible to Ubuntu.

Tested on Ubuntu 23.04 beta, there is an extension that will probably come installed by default in a future release. with her we can stack the windows and resize several by swiping at the junction between them. But because GNOME likes it simple, there's little for the user to do; It's basically all automatic. KDE causes them to stack if we move them to an edge by pressing the Shift key, but they won't on Ubuntu.

Ubuntu adds to advanced window stacking

A few versions ago, Ubuntu added the extension on its own DING to allow us to have items on the desktop, and it seems that what is planning is to do the same, but with another extension. Its name is a bit long, and in order to install it you have to open a terminal and type:

sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-tiling-assistant

Once the extension is installed, you will have to log out and log back in. To see a couple of settings, you will have to go to Settings / Ubuntu Desktop, and below, now in English, "Enhanced Tiling" appears, which in Spanish would translate as "improved stacking" or advanced. The two options that we can activate or deactivate are:

  • Stacking Popup: When we put a window on an edge, a popup will appear allowing us to select another window, much like what we see in Windows.
  • Stacking Groups: A window is added to a stacking group if it does not overlap other window groups during stacking.

The extension appears in the official Ubuntu 23.04 repositories, but not those for older versions. It is an extension designed to work on GNOME >44, and is not installed by default. It probably is in Ubuntu 23.10, but for now it can be installed in the Lunar Lobster beta. The stable version will arrive this Thursday, and users who want to stack windows in Ubuntu will be able to do so thanks to this extension.
