Shazam launches an extension for Chrome to identify songs from the browser

Shazam extension for Chrome

Shazam, owned by Apple, is the most famous application when it comes to identifying what song is playing. If we have a mobile phone or tablet (or even a watch) nearby, the easiest thing is to ask it with your voice (where possible) to tell us what that topic is called, but on a computer it is not so easy. In Linux we can use songrec, change User Agent of the browser so that it believes that we use Safari, the only really compatible browser, or install a new extension.

The first thing we have to say is that if we go to shazam.com and scroll to the bottom of the page we will see where or for what platforms it is available. It is for iOS / iPadOS (and by extension for macOS, now that you can run iPad apps), for Android from Google Play or Galaxy Store and, now, also from the Chrome Web Store. So there is an extension and it is official, but it only works in Chrome.

Shazam extension for Chro… mium

The extension works in Chrome and also in Vivaldi, so I think I am not wrong when I say that works in any Chromium-based browser, like Edge or Brave. The problem? It has one that I consider fat, and I do not know if it is because we are facing the first versions or because they want to continue leaving the best for Apple devices.

Its operation is very simple: we go to the Chrome Web Store, install the extension (link), we go to the tab in which something is playing, we click on the extension button and then on the Shazam icon. Have you stayed with the detail? You have to click to recognize the audio that sounds in a tab; It does NOT work if we are playing the music in VLC, Elisa, Rhythmbox, Lollypop or any player other than the browser itself.

So what good would it do? What you see in the header capture doesn't make much sense. If I put a music video, YouTube already tells me what song it is. If I'm listening to Spotify, three-quarters of the same. Yes, it can come in handy if we are playing other types of content, such as a movie or a radio station, but all from the browser.

I would like Apple to enable the option to use Shazam from the browser as it can already be done from Safari, but hey, at the moment we already have an official extension that can solve any doubt. Less is nothing.
