Linux Mint 20.3 has a new Edge ISO for users with newer hardware

Linux Mint 20.3 Edge ISO

Although they promised it for Christmas, Linux Mint 20.3 it was first available for download on January 5. It's based on Ubuntu 20.04, and that means it uses the same kernel as Focal Fossa. It also means something else: computers with newer hardware can have support problems, and that is something that Clement Lefebvre and his team cannot allow. For this reason they release special ISO images, as reported on their official blog.

Forgive me die-hard Linux Mint fans for my poor memory, not knowing these images existed, or not finding anything by taking a quick look at the Linux Mint blog. But today a Linux Mint 20.3 Edge ISO has been released, which is a different ISO than the official version with a more modern kernel. "One" uses Linux 5.4, thrown out in November 2019, and this Edge ISO uses Linux 5.13, the same one used by Ubuntu 21.10 Impish Indri. The intention is as mentioned: to work better on computers that are two years old or less. Or even that it can be installed if the normal version cannot be installed.

Linux Mint 20.3 releases ISO with Linux 5.13

This is a quick announcement to let you know that an "Edge" ISO image is now available for Linux Mint 20.3. This image is made for people whose hardware is too new to boot the 5.4 LTS kernel included in Linux Mint 20.3. It ships with kernel 5.13.0-25 instead.

For everything else, the operating system is the same. It will be supported until 2025, it includes the improvements in the Mint-Y theme, applications like Celluloid, Hypnotix or the image viewer use the dark color by default, improvements in the desktops in which it is available (Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce), app Thingy, which is a document viewer... You have more details in the article we published earlier this month.

If you are one of those users who have a newer computer and it does not work for you with the normal edition with Linux 5.4, the Edge ISO of Linux Mint 20.3 is available here.

The Edge iso was born out of a Mint user project a couple of releases ago. They, if I remember correctly, wanted to create an iso with a more recent kernel {latest kernel supported by the LTS to date} and they asked the Mint team a few things… in the end it was the Mint team itself who ended up taking charge of the project {from step ensuring the minimum standards} what has been a project very well received by the community although somewhat low profile.
