How to install Budgie Desktop Environment on Debian

Budgie Desktop Environment on Debian 12

This is one of those articles that we write for the interest of users. Many times we know what arouses our readers' curiosity about visits, but on this occasion we are going to write how to install Budgie on Debian by a comment from one of our loyal followers. As you point out, Debian is the ancestor of Ubuntu, and not everything that is valid for an operating system is valid for all its children and much less for their parents.

The vast majority of Linux documentation available online is about Ubuntu, but neither Ubuntu is Debian nor Debian is Ubuntu. There are packages that are not called the same, and some routes may not be the same either. But we are here to help Debian users install one of the most beautiful desks of those available on Linux.

Install Budgie on Debian with these steps

Before starting, I think it is good to explain that A graphical environment is not the same as a desktop, or at least as I understand it. But in order not to confuse anyone, I will only say that there are usually at least two different options: in one of them only the interface will be installed, such as in Plasma the bottom panel and the libraries necessary for the applications to look good; On the other hand, you can install a more complete package that includes, in addition to that interface, project applications.

Steps to follow

Once we have decided if we want the basics or a more complete experience, we can continue.

  1. The first thing we have to do is update the packages with sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade.

Update packages in Debian 12

  1. Once updated, I would recommend rebooting. It is a step that is not necessary, but you never know if something new will work better after starting the operating system.
  2. With everything updated, we are ready to install the desktop. In the terminal we will have to write:
  • For the graphical environment:
sudo apt install budgie-desktop
  • For recommended environment and packages for an enhanced Budgie experience:
sudo apt install --install-suggests budgie-desktop
  1. When it shows us the list of everything it is going to install, press the S(í) or Y(es) key and then Enter.
  2. It will reach a point where it will ask us which session manager we want to use, GDM or LightDM. In the first window we can only choose Accept, so we press Enter.

1st step to choose login

  1. As for what to choose, well, this should be up to each individual. For example, if we are installing Budgie on GNOME and we want GNOME to run well, gdm3 is usually used, but Budgie works better with lightdm. So I'll choose the second option and press Enter.

Choosing LightDM for Budgie

  1. We wait for it to finish installing all the packages. By the time you finish working, the installation process will be finished and everything will be completed with a reboot.

How to log into the new environment

To enter the Budgie desktop, the first thing you need to do is log out. In GNOME it is done from the system tray / shutdown button / Close the session and confirm by choosing "Close the session" again. NOTE: : If we have chosen LightDM, it is necessary to restart to be able to take the next step.

Logout

Already on the login screen, we choose the icon next to the name (LightDM) or at the bottom right (GDM) and, from there, we choose "Budgie", "Budgie Desktop" or whatever appears with " "Budgie."

Choose Budgie Desk

We enter username and password and, upon entering, we would already be in Budgie. What you see after installation, at least if you choose the full experience, is something like the following:

What it installs at the time of writing is Budgie 10.7.1, which is just a medium version older than the latest 10.8.1. To install a more updated version you have to make changes to the repositories or compile and install it yourself, something that we do not recommend to users who have found this small guide useful because they probably do not have the necessary knowledge.
