Do you know what a "numbat" is? Me neither. But it is not new either, since I rarely know the animal that Canonical uses to name its new releases. I do know what a gorilla, a hippopotamus or a lobster is, but I didn't know what a dingo was and I had seen but I wouldn't know how to name a stoat or a kudu. It was known that Ubuntu 24.04 would have a "noble" animal as a pet, and now we know what animal that will be.
The animal will be the numbat, or else we would not have started with that question. And the full name, Ubuntu 24.04 Noble Numbat. At this point it is time to explain a little what this animal is: its scientific name is "Myrmecobius fasciatus", and it is a species of marsupial (more information, on the Internet or the Wikipedia). It is not usually found in Africa, but we already know that this rule for naming Ubuntu versions is not very strict, just ask the current minotaur.
Ubuntu 24.04 is coming April 25
The second part of the three in one is that the development of Ubuntu 24.04 has already begun. This does not mean that it can already be tested; only have begun to take the first steps, decision making, etc. In the next few days they will upload the first Daily Live, at which time we will be able to basically download a Mantic Minotaur with the development repositories on which everything is added and shaping the future Noble Numbat.
Last but not least, the release date of this noble numbat has been announced. Except in 2006, which if I'm not mistaken was the only time in which something was released in June, Ubuntu releases arrive in April and October, and after a release in month 10 there is one in month 04. The exact day will be he April 25.
Regarding the news, Linux 6.7 or 6.8, updated packages and desktops, among which the main edition will use GNOME 46 and KDE should continue at 5.27, since it seems unlikely to me that a version with long-term support will go up to such a Plasma new. Noble Numbat will be an LTS version.
