Plasma 5.25 floating panel is an interesting idea, but its design should be rethought

floating panel

plasma 5.25 is an interesting update to the KDE desktop. For example, a gesture has been introduced to access the overview from the touch panel. On the other hand, there is now an option Floating Panel to do just that, make the bottom panel float, as seen in the header screenshot. When activated, the panel peels off the edges, but it seems like it's not thought out as well as it should.

It is clear that this is somewhat subjective, but the following image speaks for itself. What they have thought in KDE is the following: when activated, the panel moves away from the edges a few millimeters, but when there is a maximized screen, it stays in its position, filling the margins with color. The problem is that it does not maintain its size, not to mention that the task manager icons do not reach the top or bottom. So, in the end, when we maximize a window we have a thicker panel and less aesthetic.

Plasma 5.25's floating panel takes up a lot more space

When nothing is maximized, It seems that we are facing a miniature Deepin dock, but that thumbnail occupies several extra millimeters when we maximize. What you have above these lines is a reduced image, and the extra thickness is still noticeable. And the fact that the icons have color above and below causes eye pain.

How would I fix it? Not keeping the size it occupies when it floats and recovering the size it occupies when it doesn't. When it floats, the size does not matter, since the windows can be placed on top. The problem we have is when it is no longer floating, that we waste something (quite a lot if it is a laptop) screen. That and aesthetics.

At the moment, KDE seems happy with the change and there has been no mention of things changing. The project tends to do a lot of small UI tweaks, and I hope this is one that mentions any weekend of these. Floating, yes. That it takes up so much space, no.
