Raspberry Pi OS 2022-09-06 introduces new menu search and audio input control, among other new features

Raspberry Pi OS 2022-09-06

There is a new version of the official operating system for the Raspberry Pi. What announced today is Raspberry Pi OS 2022-09-06, and due to the numbering it is supposed to be ready since yesterday, Tuesday the 6th, but the important thing is that it can already be used. It has come mostly to correct errors, but they have also introduced a series of new features that will improve the user experience for those who do not want to experiment and use the operating system offered by the company that manufactures the boards.

At the beginning of this year They advanced that they had started working with Wayland, but this release note makes no mention of this protocol. In fact, and to confirm it, I have searched for the word with Ctrl + F, but no, nothing. They did mention the new functions that are not to correct bugs, and the first thing to appear on the scene was that the menu Whisker now allows searching writing in a box specially designed for it.

Raspberry Pi OS Highlights 2022-09-06

  • Changed the main menu plugin in the taskbar to allow text searches. Now clicking on the raspberry or pressing the META button will bring up the menu, and from there you can type to find the app you're looking for. As you write, the matches appear, more or less as they appear in many other options available in Linux.
  • New audio input control. Previously, the volume icon on the taskbar could be used to choose audio input and output. From now on there are two icons, one for input and one for output. If an audio device is connected, a microphone will appear from where some parameters can be configured.
  • Picamera2 is available.
  • New keyboard shortcuts, such as Ctrl+Alt+B to open the Bluetooth menu or Ctrl+Alt+W to open the WiFi menu.
  • Support for NetworkManager, in part because it adds a lot of extra features that can be useful. The change must be done manually by opening a terminal, typing sudo raspi-config and go to option 6, advanced options, AA, Network Config and choose option 2, NetworkManager. When you ask, we restart.

For existing installations, this is all achieved by upgrading the operating system. The package network-manager you have to install it manually. For new installations, the new images are available at this link.
