postmarketOS, Linux-based mobile operating system, could support Android apps thanks to Anbox

postmarketOS could support Android apps

If there is a reason why Android and iOS are the two most used mobile operating systems, that reason is mainly the applications that they have available. For the same reason, other systems such as Windows Mobile, put aside by the developers, did not get off the ground. Today there are more mobile operating systems on the market, some of them based on Linux such as postmarket OS, but they have little or nothing to do if we cannot use the most famous apps such as WhatsApp that are already used by more than 2.000 million users around the world.

It is true that in Linux we have many applications. It is a fact. The problem, in addition to not being able to use some very popular ones, is that others that are available are not designed for mobile phones like Android apps are. For this reason, the developers of postmarketOS, which uses a mobile version of the Plasma graphical environment from KDE, they are working on a solution. That solution starts with using anbox.

Anbox will make postmarketOS able to use Android apps on the PinePhone, among others

anbox is a tool / emulator that allows us to run Android apps on our Linux-based operating system. It has been with us for some time now and, to tell the truth, its use is not the most intuitive in the world, but postmarketOS plans to make everything easier and allow us to use Android apps on phones like pinephone or By 5.

Support for running Android apps on postmarketOS is still in its infancy, but it is expected that sooner or later it will be a reality, reliable and stable. In my opinion, this would change the rules of the game, since with a phone of this type we can use a free operating system with all that this means, for a lower price and, on the other hand and if we decide to do so, that is to say It will be up to us if we need and want to install the most popular Android apps.

Does this change your opinion regarding phones using a Linux-based mobile operating system?

One of the critical points is generally the price. Hopefully it is within the range of traditional SmartPhones.
