OBS Studio 30 introduces support for AV1 on Linux and says goodbye to Ubuntu 20.04

NOTE Studio 30

I would be lying if I said that it was my favorite program to record the screen in Linux, but I would also be lying if what I said was that it is not what I use every time I want to share a video from my desktop with sound included under Wayland. And since it is cross-platform, I have gotten used to it and use it on Windows as well. This short presentation is to talk about NOTE Studio 30, a new major update of a program that not only serves to record the screen, but also allows us to broadcast on streaming, For example.

OBS Studio 30 has changed the first number, jumping from the previous 29, and that means that, as a major update, it has to introduce new functions with some importance. And if it doesn't work, at least it supports it, and OBS Studio 30 now supports QSV H264, HVC and AV1 on Linux. What you have below is the list with news that have arrived in this version, although there are also changes and bug fixes.

What's new in OBS Studio 30

  • Added WHIP/WebRTC output.
  • With the introduction of WHIP, FTL is scheduled to be removed in a release after May 2024.
  • Redesigned the status bar.
  • The redesigned status bar now provides the same information in a more organized and well-structured way, with more representative and recognizable icons.
  • Added full height docks option to the “Docks” menu.
  • When enabled, a dock like chat can take up the full height of the OBS window.
  • Added support for Intel QSV H264, HEVC, AV1 on Linux.

  • Added an audio capture application on macOS.
  • Added a “Safe Mode” that runs OBS without third-party plugins, scripting, and websockets.
  • When OBS detects that it was not closed correctly, it will offer the user the option to boot into Safe Mode for troubleshooting. It can also be activated manually through the "Help" menu.
  • Redesigned the virtual camera in macOS to work with all apps (in macOS 13 and later).
  • Added a YouTube Live control room panel when streaming to YouTube.
  • Added 10-bit capture support for Decklink devices.
  • Added HDR playback support for Decklink output.
  • Added an option to hide macOS “Screenshot” OBS windows.

The complete list of changes can be seen in the notes from this release. OBS Studio 30 can now be downloaded from Flatub, the official way to install it on Linux. There is also a repository for Ubuntu that can be added from a terminal by typing sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio. This release removes support for Ubuntu 20.04, Qt5 and earlier versions of FFmpeg 4.4.
