Linux 5.0 reaches the end of its life cycle. Update now

Linux 5.0 reaches the end of its life cycle

Just two months ago today, Linus Torvalds launched Linux 5.0, a version that said it changed to number 5 because it had no more fingers left even counting those of the hands and feet. We soon realized that he was not telling the truth, that he did come with important news, at least in terms of support included. Today, that version of the Linux kernel has reached the end of its life cycle, coinciding with the release of v5.0.21.

The one launched today is the latest maintenance release of the 5.0 series. This means that you will no longer receive updates, so all users are advised to update to version 5.1 as soon as possible. This should not be necessary for those of us who are using a popular version of Linux, since the companies that develop them usually release their own updates if they discover a security flaw or other important bug.

Upgrade to Linux 5.1 if you are using the 5.0 series

Greg Kroah-Hartman, who has maintained Linux 5.0, yes advises to update to all users who are on Linux 5.0, but I would only advise it to those who have installed it manually and do not receive direct updates from the companies that develop their operating system. Or if they think these companies take too long to update the Linux kernel. As an X-Buntu user, I know Canonical responds immediately when it finds a bug, so I have nothing to fear.

To update the Linux kernel there are three options:

  • Download and compile the tarball.
  • Install the base packages for our version of Linux.
  • Use graphical tools like Greatness.

Whichever method you choose, watch out. If something goes wrong we can have problems. Me I recommend not uninstalling the previous version (With sudo apt autoremove, for example) until you have restarted the operating system and verified that everything works perfectly. If not, we can always start with the older version of the kernel and fix any problems.

Are you going to update the kernel of your operating system? Which version will you choose?
