LibreELEC 11 now available, based on Kodi 20 Nexus and improved support for x86_64

LibreELEC 11.0 based on Kodi 20

A while ago I didn't see much point in systems like this, but for me everything changed with the python problems in linux version. In order for some plugins of this famous multimedia center to work on the operating system that we editors and most LXA readers use, you had to take a walk through some Python configurations, but those problems they seemed stay behind with the latest version. To avoid compatibility problems I created a flash drive with this operating system, and soon I will update the software of that flash drive to FreeELEC 11 stable, available for a few moments.

It had been a long time since it could be tested as beta, and in fact I had my USB with that preliminary version, but today the launch of LibreELEC 11 has been announced, since based on the latest Kodi 20.0 Nexus. Its developers warn that it will not update automatically from 10.0, but it can be updated manually from the LibreELEC configuration settings. They also report that older versions (<19) will need to be installed from scratch because of the jump to Python 3, or more specifically because support for Python 2.x has been dropped.

What's new in LibreELEC 11.0

Although built on a virtually complete operating system, LibreELEC has just enough to make Kodi work, and almost all of the new features that LibreELEC 11.0 includes are shared with the latest version of the media center. For more information about Kodi 20.0, you can read the article we published last January. The novelties of LibreELEC 11.0 go a little hand in hand with where it is going to be used, and for example it has been improved support for x86_64 image:

The generic image now runs the same GBM/V4L2 graphics stack that we have used for some time with ARM platforms. Now supports HDR with recent AMD and Intel GPUs. We have added a Generic-Legacy image that runs the old X11 graphics stack used in LE v7-v10. You can upgrade between the GBM and X11 images without issue.

LibreELEC 11.0 is now available on the page of project downloads. It can be recorded on SD cards or a USB with its own tool, but also with others such as Etcher or Imager (from Raspberry). As we have explained, existing users can update manually from the LibreELEC configuration section if you are on Kodi 19, but not from previous versions, who will have to do a clean installation.
