How to install Kodi 19 Matrix right now on Ubuntu and derivatives (APT)

Kodi 19 alpha

10 days ago we wrote an article announcing the launch of Code 19 Matrix. At the moment, v19 of the famous multimedia software is in the alpha phase, so it is not recommended for use on computers where we hope it will respond perfectly, but it includes important news that you are probably interested in trying. And, although a server thought there was no way to do it, a mistake I made because I never tried it and to see what was on its FTP server, yes it can, and in this article we are going to explain how to install Kodi 19 ALPHA on Linux.

Although I think it is not necessary, I want to explain that what we will be doing if we follow this tutorial is adding a repository from which we can only install preliminary versions of Kodi, so, once added, we will not return to the stable version unless make the way back. In any case, these are the steps that will teach you how to install Kodi 19 on Linux, plus specifically in Ubuntu and derivatives compatible with APT.

How to install Kodi 19 Nightly

The first thing we have to do is open a terminal and write this command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/xbmc-nightly

With the repository added we already have the usual options, that is, we can open the software center, search for Kodi and install the package or continue in the terminal and write

sudo apt update && sudo apt install kodi

To remove this version of Kodi, we will have to type the usual commands:

sudo apt remove kodi
sudo apt purge kodi

And if we want the latest stable version to appear again in our official repositories, we have to delete the repository from Software and Updates or with these commands, being the first to install the «ppa purge» tool:

sudo apt install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:team-xbmc/xbmc-nightly

The developer team has not yet advanced when they will release the stable version of Kodi 19 Matrix, but by following the steps explained here we can test it right now. Personally, I would recommend doing it in a virtual machine like the ones we can run in GNOME Boxes.
