Android P receives June security update, includes improvements for Pixel devices

Android P July 2019

Like every month, Google has released a new security update for its mobile operating system. The update includes patches 2019-07-01 and 2019-07-05 that are now available to fix a total of 33 security flaws that affect Android P, more specifically to the system, libraries, multimedia framework and Qualcomm components, including those that are not open source. From what we read in the release note, there is at least one critical failure.

Is a critical vulnerability in the multimedia framework that could allow a remote attacker to use a file specially designed to execute arbitrary code in the context of a privileged process. As Google reports, «lThe severity assessment is based on the effect that exploiting the vulnerability might have on an affected device«, Which means that it could be exploited relatively easily (as long as an attacker with the necessary knowledge tried).

The Android P July update also includes the following improvements on Pixel devices:

  • Improvements in the recognition of the command "Ok Google" and in the detection of music in all supported Pixels.
  • Fixed a bug present on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL that could cause the device to get stuck when starting the operating system.
  • Fixed a bug on the Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL that caused it to get stuck in EDL mode on blank screens.
  • Improved support for Japanese Unicode.
  • Improved the performance of the Titan M module on the Pixel 3, Pixel XL, Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL.

Google has already announced the release of this July security update for Android P, which means that it has already started to reach the first users. Like other releases, the arrival will be gradual and will appear on all supported devices in the coming days. Have you already been one of them?
