Forbidden to use the cloud. When it is best to continue with the traditional model

I had to work with a person denied for technology. At least ten people in the same number of years tried (and failed) to teach him to send an email, print a text or enter Facebook. Without reaching those extremes, there are people whose computer knowledge is limited to the mechanical execution of certain procedures. In cases like that, it is worth asking if the economic, emotional and time costs that it would take to retrain them are justified.

Use of the cloud is prohibited. Other situations where it is convenient to continue as we are

If it works, do not touch it

The raison d'être of cloud computing, is to provide at the time it is needed and without the user having to do anything of the level of resources necessary for the task carried out. It is about responding to increases in demand rather than decreases.

Unless your work is making multimedia content or creating video games, you will probably never reach the limit of the use of your computer's resources.

In case they are too big for you, maybe you should consider upgrading to a Chromebook. Which, in a way, is also going to the cloud.

You need higher privacy and security requirements than most users

If you are an Asian country trying to develop atomic weapons, it might not be a good idea to save the plans in the clouds of Amazon or Microsoft. Both companies are required to share information with their governments.

And of course there are always the cybercriminals.

Code Spaces was a cloud-based platform for storing program code and collaborating between developers. I say it was because a criminal had no better idea than to enter their servers and delete most of the uploaded content and customer data. Nor did he forget the backups.

The consequences?

We can read them in the notice who posted:

Code Spaces will not be able to operate beyond this point, the cost of resolving this matter to date and the expected cost of reimbursing customers who have been left without the service they paid for will put Code Spaces in an irreversible position both financially as in terms of credibility

Therefore, at this time we have no alternative but to stop operating and focus on supporting our affected customers in the export of any remaining data they have left us.

In this case, the attack occurred because the user had access to the control panel of the cloud management software. And the operators had 24 hours' notice that they had had an intrusion. Not only were they unable to prevent the intrusion, they also failed to adopt the appropriate countermeasures.

In case you need high levels of privacy and security, the best thing is Take Mark Twain's advice «Put all your eggs in one basket and then WATCH THAT BASKET !!
