Forbidden to use the cloud. When it is best to continue with the traditional model

Forbidden to use the cloud

I had to work with a person denied for technology. At least ten people in the same number of years tried (and failed) to teach him to send an email, print a text or enter Facebook. At the risk that doubts about my mental health turn into certainties, I am willing to swear that his presence in the same equipment room was enough for the software to experience hitherto undocumented bugs and the hardware to refuse to continue working according to the manufacturer's designs.

Without reaching those extremes, there are people whose computer knowledge is limited to the mechanical execution of certain procedures. In cases like that, it is worth asking if the economic, emotional and time costs that it would take to retrain them are justified.

Use of the cloud is prohibited. Other situations where it is convenient to continue as we are

If it works, do not touch it

The stage of home computers arrived in Argentina late and badly, the Commodore were assembled by a manufacturer of washing machines (the gossip says that with parts that did not pass the quality control of the USA), La Spectrum one of fans and a version of MSX was in charge of a TV assembler.

However, with the PCs we caught up to the international rhythm? What was the difference?

The hyperinflation of 89

None of the three models of home computers was capable of processing quantities with so many zeros. And let's not talk about the hassle of having to manually update a price list of 50 or more items hour by hour. Suddenly a PC became a must-have tool for everyday activity.

The point is yes there is no external situation that makes the current technological solution you use insufficient or expensive, you should continue as you are

Actually, that was the reason why I did not agree with the post cataract recommending Linux distributions as an alternative to Windows 7. If you are a personal or professional user with enough time and interest to learn how to use Linux, from now on I recommend going over. The same if it is a company that can hire a professional to advise it on the change.

But, if you are a freelancer or a small business that cannot interrupt your work, the only viable alternative is Windows 10.

You have more computing resources than you really need

The raison d'être of cloud computing, is to provide at the time it is needed and without the user having to do anything of the level of resources necessary for the task carried out. It is about responding to increases in demand rather than decreases.

Unless your work is making multimedia content or creating video games, you will probably never reach the limit of the use of your computer's resources.

In case they are too big for you, maybe you should consider upgrading to a Chromebook. Which, in a way, is also going to the cloud.

You need higher privacy and security requirements than most users

If you are an Asian country trying to develop atomic weapons, it might not be a good idea to save the plans in the clouds of Amazon or Microsoft. Both companies are required to share information with their governments.

And of course there are always the cybercriminals.

Code Spaces was a cloud-based platform for storing program code and collaborating between developers. I say it was because a criminal had no better idea than to enter their servers and delete most of the uploaded content and customer data. Nor did he forget the backups.

The consequences?

We can read them in the notice who posted:

Code Spaces will not be able to operate beyond this point, the cost of resolving this matter to date and the expected cost of reimbursing customers who have been left without the service they paid for will put Code Spaces in an irreversible position both financially as in terms of credibility

Therefore, at this time we have no alternative but to stop operating and focus on supporting our affected customers in the export of any remaining data they have left us.

In this case, the attack occurred because the user had access to the control panel of the cloud management software. And the operators had 24 hours' notice that they had had an intrusion. Not only were they unable to prevent the intrusion, they also failed to adopt the appropriate countermeasures.

In case you need high levels of privacy and security, the best thing is Take Mark Twain's advice «Put all your eggs in one basket and then WATCH THAT BASKET !!

And have a copy of the basket, and that it is not absorbed by the net. Only at the time of copying, and to withdraw from the network once updated.

      Good observation and very timely
Sure a bit fiddly with a real egg basket
How do you copy an egg basket?
