Debian 12.5 arrives with more than 100 patches to correct bugs and security flaws

Debian 12.5

On their usual day, these launches usually occur on Saturdays, and two months after the earlier version, Debian Project has announced the release of Debian 12.5, still codenamed "Bookworm." Has arrived along with Debian 11.9, the version released three years ago that will continue to receive updates for at least two more years. Although both versions receive new numbering, they are no different from the 2023 Bookworm and 2021 Bullseye, beyond the fact that they have received updates in the form of new packages, bug fixes and security patches.

This is how the Debian Project remembers it in the notes of this type of release, when it says that «Please note that this point release is not a new version of Debian 12, but only updates some of the included packages. There is no need to throw away old bookworm holders. After installation, packages can be updated to current versions using an updated Debian mirror«.

Debian 12.5 is the new ISO with updated software

The differences between the point versions and those originally released are found in the updates. Debian and other projects often release new images with more up-to-date software, but, first, it doesn't include new versions of desktops and libraries, and, second, everything new is available as an upgrade to existing facilities.

In total, Debian 12.5 includes 68 fixes and 42 security patches, making a total of 110 changes. Details and the full list are available at release note. On the other hand, Debian 11.9 includes 70 fixes and 92 security patches.

For new installations, Debian 12.5 images are available for amd64, arm64, armel, armhf, i386, mips, mipsel, ppc64el, and s390x architectures at this link. They offer images with the normal installer and, here, also images with Cinnamon, GNOME, KDE, LXDE, LXQt, MATE and Xfce desktops.
