Ubuntu 16.04 LTS already has a name: Xenial Xerus

Ubuntu

While we wait for Ubuntu 15.10, we already know the name of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, it will be called Xenial Xerus

We are all waiting for the official release of Ubuntu 15.10 Willy Werewolf, which should not take long to come out as it was scheduled for today. Meanwhile we will have to settle for this news, and that is it is already known what will be the new name of the next Ubuntu long support system, that is, version 16.04.

The name chosen for this task is Xenial Xerus, which has been chosen due to several reasons:

  • House brand: It is typical in Canonical to choose these strange names like Precise Pangolin or Willy Werewolf, being names that they attract a lot of attention and they sound just as powerful.
  • Xenial: Xenial means amicable, and has been chosen because they seek to create a system that is friendly to the users who manage it.
  • Xerus: It is the name of an African species, specifically a chipmunk, which is fast, social and friendly. It was chosen because they want to create a fluid system that has good network connectivity.

This system will follow the classic Ubuntu release line, with a new system coming out every 6 months and a long support system every two years, so we will have the system available in April 2016 with their respective variants (Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu Mate…).

As for what this system will bring, hardly anything is known, Since Ubuntu 15.10 has not yet been released, so it's too early.

As for Ubuntu 15.10 the official version has not yet come out, we hope you do it throughout the day as planned or early tomorrow morning. As soon as it comes out, there will be an article dedicated to it created by me or by my colleagues explaining its news and how it works.

If you can't wait for the final release, remind yourself that the Ubuntu release candidate 15.10, in which you have a version very similar to the final version, but with some bugs.

As far as I know the versions with long support are every two years (10.04 12.04 14.04 16.04)

A little clarification. Ubuntu LTS versions are every 2 years, not every year as the article says. Greetings.

It is enough for you to say it, do not want to seem wise with your clarifications that say the same as the previous one. On the other hand, what intrigues me is whether they will finally decide to send Mir as a graphics server or for the moment they will leave the stable and reliable X. From the comments regarding the name it seems that 16.04 will be the last release with X by default. I hope so and leave Mir for future editions.

Now the Xubuntu Xenial Xerus 16.04 will be the new Xubuntu XXX. I wonder if it will only be for people over 18 years of age?

I don't know if at the end of the Z they start again with the A, if so, would they put "Perry Platypus" in the letter P?
