The name of Ubuntu 23.04 will possibly be Lunar Lobster

Ubuntu 23.04 could be called Lunar Lobster

Just like it happened this year, the name of Ubuntu 23.04, the first version of next year could take us to the bottom of the sea. It will be called Lunar Lobster or Langosta Lunar in the language of Cervantes.

Gone are the days when Mark Shuttleworth explained on his blog what the chosen name was and what characteristics of that name they tried to convey to the version. At present I suppose that they only limit themselves to choosing an animal and an adjective at random depending on the letter of the alphabet that touches it.

In reality, everything is a speculation of specialized media. In the official Ubuntu account you see a tweet with a moon and a lobster emoticon and a project on Launchpad (Canonical's collaborative development platform) with the title of Lunar and the clarification that it is the next version of Ubuntu in the description.

The name of Ubuntu 23.04

The biological description of the lobster does not seem to provide much information as to why the name was chosen., beyond the fact that it begins with L. It is a decapod crustacean that lives in not too deep rocky bottoms and hides among the rocks.

Nor does the mole provide too many clues.  Defines what is related to the moon or what is influenced by it.

However, Tarot followers have something more to contribute. There is a well-known card that represents a ten-legged crustacean (depending on the design it can be a lobster, a crab or a lobster). There seem to be various interpretations of its meaning. For some, the moon represents the search and the crustacean is in charge of devouring the transitory. Others relate it to emotion or intuition.

I don't believe in those things, but hopefully it means that we will have, after a long time, an interesting version.

Anyway, it's all speculation.

What we know

At the moment the only thing we know for sure is that the release date will be April 27, 2023. and, as befits odd years, it will be supported for nine months. Comparing the respective development schedules, it doesn't seem like GNOME 44 is ready on time, so it may come with an update to branch 43.
