The Gnome Foundation will also help in the development of Librem 5

Last week we learned about the crowdfunding campaign for Librem 5, the first smartphone with Plasma Mobile from the Purism company, and the KDE Project. Although the money does not arrive, the support if they are being more numerous.

Recently, the Foundation Gnome has announced that it will help Purism and Librem 5 so that the foundation's software is present on the first KDE smartphone.

The Gnome Foundation has indicated that they will not bet on a new mobile or new software, since the mobile market is very saturated and most users are betting on Google's Android. However, if that will help Librem 5 users enjoy Gnome Shell and Gnome software on the device, thus collaborating with the KDE Project and the Purism company.

The Gnome Foundation will collaborate to bring Gnome Shell to Librem 5

This does not mean that we have a Gnome interface for mobile devices, but it may if we have a Gnome interface when we connect the smartphone to a monitor or a screen. An interface or function that would be interesting for Librem 5 users.

In any case, in the absence of 32 days to finish the campaign de crowdfunding than Purism created for Librem 5, the project needs a million dollars. A fairly high amount indicating that Librem 5 will have some trouble materializing.

The support of Gnome and KDE presages that this device will come to fruition, but perhaps not as Purism wants or has projected. Possibly more companies and institutions start a collaboration to improve Librem 5, but at the moment we only know KDE and Gnome. However Will there be any distribution that supports the creation of this smartphone? Will Librem 5 be the smartphone of Linux and its users?

Hmm, there is no other way than to offer that collaboration, otherwise it will remain like a leather in front of the whole community. It's not about selfishness, in that sense I do agree with Linux Mint's Clement Lefebvre on offering a few specialized features but getting it right.

That project will go ahead, but we started with the same problem in the GNU / Linux world today on PC's: providing compatibility and support to everyone and this atomized community. Given the shortage of cash, they will have to receive help from everyone who delivers it and in the long run, maneuverability is lost.

With everything you have to keep going backwards, they assume.
