OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 is soon to be released

OpenMandriva Lx

OpenMandriva Lx is a Linux distribution created and oriented for all types of users, this distribution is distributed and developed by the association called OpenMandriva, which is a non-profit association.

This Linux distribution It is based on Mandriva Linux which was a French distribution, not so popular among Linux users, but one that some users came to recommend at the time.

For those people who do not know the name Mandriva Linux I can comment on the following about this Linux distribution that ended its development several years ago.

Mandriva Linux was a Linux distribution published by the French company Mandriva intended for both beginners and experienced users, oriented to personal computers and servers with a focus on users who are introducing themselves to the world of Linux and free software.

About OpenMandriva Lx

In the beginning Mandriva Linux was based on Red Hat and featured the KDE desktop environment, over time Mandriva developers took their own reins and parted ways with Red Hat.

Thus began a great project with which they implemented many of their own tools in the distribution.

Time passed and the moment came when it was not affordable to maintain development of the distribution so the end of it came.

Given this, OpenMandriva Lx arose, retaking the project, but under its own reins. And that's how the development of this distribution began.

Over the years The development of OpenMandriva Lx has been slow so to speak, but this does not neglect the great effort to continue it.

Although OpenMandriva Lx is not very popular, it has a large community of users and developers who maintain the project. So OpenMandriva Lx aims to be a Linux distribution that is a reference to the KDE desktop environment.

Moment the distribution is in its version 3.03, but it is already under development and its next version OpenMandriva 4.0 is being released.

About OpenMandriva Lx 4.0

The OpenMandriva developers are working to launch their new version of the OpenMandriva Lx 4 based system.

It will include several new features and all the latest technologies. In this way, the new system of OpenMandriva Lx 4.0 comes bundled with the new KDE Plasma 5.13.

Obviously, the system will also be accompanied by the latest series of software from KDE applications 18.04.3.

Between the main news and updates What is expected in the next release of the distribution we can find:

  • KDE Plasma 5.13.2
  • KDE Applications 18.04.2
  • KDE Framework 5.47.0
  • LibreOffice 6.0.2
  • Python 3.7
  • LLVM / Clang 7, GCC 8.1 Glibc 2.27 and Qt 5.11.1.
  • LXQt 0.13.0 and Lumina 1.4.0 as alternative desktop environments

Similarly, the OpenMandriva Lx 4 possibly arrived with Linux kernel 4.18 which is already in its 4th version candidate and will not take long to be released in a stable way.

This kernel is scheduled for the beginning of August 2018. For now we can say that both the Linux kernel 4.17 and 4.18 are currently offered in the Cooker version.

These include a basic RPM4-based system and the latest DNF package management systems.

Probably the most interesting thing about the OpenMandriva Lx 4 release is the fact that Full and ready support for ARM64 (AArch64) and v7 ARM hardware architectures will be included.

So this means that you can install the operating system on multiple embedded devices like the Raspberry Pi.

Well, in the words of its developers, they shared the following:

A RISC-V board arrived - we can now start to port the first open source CPU (not expected to finish in time for version 4.0). We are about to start a massive rebuild of everyone who wants to expose things that have not been updated for a long time (especially in contributions) to be corrected or removed.

And well, for now, the launch is expected in October, although the date is not well planned, it may come much earlier.

They are confusing pears for apples, in effect ARM64 support is mentioned, however the RISC-V board quote refers to another architecture.
