Linux Mint 21 will be called "Vanessa", and will be based on Ubuntu 22.04

Linux Mint 21 Vanessa

At the beginning of March we published an article in which we did echo of the last entry in the blog of this mint-flavored Linux at that time. What was happening is that Linux Mint 21 It was already taking shape, but now, in addition to its shape, it also has a name. As we have seen on other occasions, she has a woman's name, although those of us who speak Spanish may find it a bit strange how they have written it.

The Linux Mint 21 codename will be Vanessa, and the strange thing for us is that it has two «S» and not one as we write it in Spain and (I imagine) most of Latin America. But in addition, they have also given another important piece of information, although it was something that was already known, such as the operating system on which it will be based.

Linux Mint 21 will arrive with a new update tool

El operating system on which it will be based, as many of you may have already guessed, will be Ubuntu 22.04. Apart from that, Clem wanted to highlight that "Vanessa" will arrive with a new tool to update the operating system, with functions such as

  • It will be a fully graphical tool, no terminal.
  • It will be translated, but right now it's only available in English.
  • It performs more checks to make sure everything is ok.
  • It's configurable, so we can tell you what we want and don't want to update, though they don't recommend skipping updates.
  • You will keep the choice of servers (mirrors).
  • It will not force you to remove repositories.
  • It will warn, but will allow you to keep "orphaned" packages (dependencies that, in theory, are useless).
  • It will provide and manage solutions.

have not mentioned the release date, but they usually do it a couple of months after Ubuntu does, so you can expect it in June or August. The intention of the project is to launch it as soon as possible. On the other hand, they have mentioned that LMDE 4 will reach the end of its life cycle on August 22, and have taken the opportunity to talk about the good acceptance that Warpinator is having, which would be comparable to Apple's AirDrop, but Linux for Linux… but there is already one beta for iOS.

As for Vanessa, she will be available in Cinnamon, Xfce and MATE.
