I used to chat a lot for many years. Those were times when MSN was like the current WhatsApp, that which was only given to some acquaintances or people we knew on the net and we liked them. Nowadays, many groups choose other means such as Telegram or Discord, but the Linux community is still present in what is known as IRC chats. Being a little away from that world, at first I had not paid much attention to this news, but it is already a fact that the Linux community is migrating to Libera.
Until this week, the vast majority were using Freenode. It was earlier this week that I saw on Twitter that Xubuntu was going to quit freenode to have their chats in Libera.Chat, but on the one hand because I am not a user of that type of messaging services and, on the other, because it is a flavor of Ubuntu that I think is not the community's favorite, I didn't pay much attention . Later said the same Ubuntu, so that soon after the rest of the flavors followed. Today who posted a note in this regard has been Fedora.
Libera.Chat is already the new home of Ubuntu and Fedora
In all the official communications that I have read, the projects have been polite and have only mentioned "policy changes" and the like, but unofficially the new twist has also been harshly criticized, even assuring that Freenode had stayed with the names of the official Ubuntu channels. It is something that I personally have not been able to confirm, but something is happening, as Project Fedora says:
Since its inception, the Fedora Project has used the IRC freenode network for our project communications. Due to a variety of recent changes to that network, the Fedora Project is moving our IRC communications to Libera.Chat.
For the users of the network, all the notes that I have read assure that everything will continue as before, but that you will probably have to register again in Libera.Chat. As for the future of Freenode, things are not looking good. Some claim that it exists thanks to FOSS (free and open source software), and this rout will not do it any good. If it has taken place, it is because there has been a "hostile purchase" and drastic changes that the community did not like. If everything is as they paint it, Freenode is dead, long live Libera.
