KDE 6 will have support for Wayland color management extensions

Wayland at KDE

Wayland's work on KDE continues to improve

Work on the foundation that will drive the next version of the desktop environment, "KDE Plasma 6", has not stopped and improvements and new features continue to be added, of which a few days ago information was released about the arrival of the sSupport for extensions of the Wayland protocol for color management to the KWin composite server.

And it is mentioned that now the KDE Plasma 6 session based on Wayland presents a separate color management for each screen, With which users can now assign their own ICC profiles to each screen and applications that use Wayland will have correct color reproduction.

In addition to this, it is also noted that Colors selected with the Color Picker app are now converted to sRGB color space and are processed according to color profiles. One of the tasks still unsolved is to take into account the color management settings for X11 applications launched with XWayland.

Other recent changes to the KDE Plasma 6 code base that stand out are in the application manager Discover, in which the interface has been perfected, since background color has been changed, improved application card alignment, Sidebar behavior has been modernized during search, the display of program screenshots has been improved and an audio subsystem access indicator has been added for programs in Flatpak format.

In addition to this in, Show (the program to create screenshots), it is highlighted that it has added support for modes to capture only the active window or the window over which the cursor is found, and also has an option to disable shadows on the saved screenshot.

It is also highlighted that the style of title dialogs with configurations used in applications based on QtWidgets approaches the design of the system configurator and of applications based on the Kirigami framework.

Of the other changes that stand out from recent work on KDE Plasma 6:

  • A visual effect has been returned that represents the contents of desktops in the form of a rotating cube. This can be activated with Meta+C.
  • In Overview mode, added the ability to perform a full search through KRunner, and not just search through window titles.
  • Added the ability to unlock the screen using a smart card or fingerprint.
The KFontView font viewer is adapted to work in Wayland-based environments.
The settings section responsible for hotkeys has been redesigned.
  • Work with recently opened documents in KRunner has more than doubled.
Elisa music player ensures that a song plays after a single mouse click, instead of a double click.
  • Fixed a case in Plasma Wayland session where logging in would cause KWin to crash immediately and return you to the login screen
  • The most common bug in Plasma that could appear when closing notifications was corrected, by including a Qt patch that solves it, since it is already solved in Plasma
  • Fixed a race condition that caused the “Show in Activities” menu item in the window menu to only be visible sometimes
  • Fixed an irritating screen flicker that appeared when using touchpad gestures to switch virtual desktops with animations globally disabled
  • Fixed the most common bug in System Monitor that could sometimes cause it to explode when exiting or changing pages
  • Fixed a case where file associations could be inherited in the wrong order, causing certain types of documents to open in the wrong applications under certain circumstances
