It is now possible to have an Open Source smartphone (or almost)

The latest developments related to the world of Open Source have not been aimed at creating a totally free computer or creating a large operating system or Open Source distribution, the latest developments are aimed at obtaining and creating an Open Source smartphone.

We have the famous By 5, a smartphone that will come with Purism OS, a Gnu / Linux distribution. We also have Ubuntu Phone, Plasma Mobile, Firefox OS, Tizen, etc ... But really Are they available to everyone?

Personally, I think we are still a long way from having an Open Source smartphone. If it is true that the previous projects are very consolidated, but are not available to everyone Well, it is not usual to get a smartphone that has Tizen or to have a smartphone compatible with Ubuntu Phone or Plasma Mobile. But in recent days I have come up with an effective and interesting solution: use a free android smartphone.

LineageOS

Android is originally Open Source software, although when it reaches our smartphones, the operating system is debased with bloatware and proprietary and unsafe applications. We can change this with a version of Lineage OS for our smartphone.

Lineage OS is a version of Android Open Source whose code we can see, get, compile and customize. We also have this code adapted to various Android devices, among which it is common to find our smartphone. Once we install Lineage OS on our smartphone, now we have to add an app store, in this case I recommend F-Droid, a store with applications that are only Open Source. Not all of them are, but they are Open Source.

With this we will have an Open Source smartphone, but not completely Open Source since the drivers and certain libraries used by Android smartphones are still proprietary, but at least, we will have a more free alternative that is available to more people than the aforementioned projects, at least for the moment.
