Google is reversing many of its plans, but Google Photos can be a nuisance

Google Photos is no longer free

One of the options that practically any operating system offers us, be it Windows, macOS, Linux or others, when adding a service account is Google. And, in general, it can come in handy, because there we have (or you have) our emails, contacts, reminders or calendar events. But the famous search engine's company is a tech giant and as such, purchase lots of small projects, launches new features or ideas, and sometimes puts an end to them. The last thing he has killed is Google Photos, or at least as we knew it.

Since it was launched about 5 years ago, the service promised that we could upload all our photos there, free and unlimited. In fact, if we agree to la web we can still see the header image of this article without editing. That may be true right now, but it will cease to be true in the near future.

The new thing we upload to Google Photos will steal space from our cloud

Just like announced yesterday, starting next summer, or more specifically in June of 2021Everything we upload to Google Photos will consume space in our Google cloud, among which we have Drive, Gmail and other services, such as documents. If we want the same conditions as before, we have to subscribe to Google One or have a Pixel.

With the bad news already given, we must mention something that will make for some the drink will be sweeter: when the change is official, only the new that we upload will subtract space from the 15GB from the cloud. Therefore, if right now we have, for example, 10GB in photos and videos, our cloud can have a maximum of 25GB, 15 from the cloud and 10 of the photos that we had hosted in Google Photos. But whatever we upload when the time comes, it will no longer have that free and unlimited space reserved.

For my part, I'm glad I'm not a Google Photos user. I don't really like some changes, and having to look for a similar service, after 5 years of habit, would be a problem.

And do you use any alternative to google photos?
    Is there something open source?
Something we could build at home BBB?
