chromeOS 101 arrives with a name change and a new loading screen, among other news

Chrome OS 101

Although there may be a few days difference, after a new version of Google's web browser, the company launches a new installment of its desktop operating system with the same numbering. Thus, after Chrome 101 the company famous for the search engine and now part of Alphabet launched chrome OS 101. I arrive on May 9, and it did so with changes such as a new loading screen, that is, what is shown while the operating system is starting (and we miss some KDE users…).

chromeOS 101 was scheduled for a couple of weeks before of what finally arrived, and the reasons for the delay are unknown, but it is never too late if happiness is good. Among said said, forgive the redundancy, we also have improvements in firmware updates, something that never hurts since it is a fundamental part of any operating system and its peripherals.

Highlights of chromeOS 101

  • New home screen of the operating system. Now the background is black and the "chromeOS" logo and text appear in the center. Regarding how the name is spelled, it's the first time I see it like that, and even looking at the developer website I have verified that it is new. Before it was written by Chrome OS; now it is spelled chromeOS (which is a bit reminiscent of macOS).
  • From now on there will be diagnostic tools to help us test our own and third-party hardware like touchpads and keyboards. There is now an option in the settings/About chromeOS menu with which we can check for firmware updates for peripherals.
  • Ability to start an online recovery.
  • Bug fixes and security patches.

chromeOS 101, of which it seems that we will have to get used to writing it in the new way, has been available since last Monday, so the update should already be waiting on any compatible device.
