In addition to innovations and bug fixes, 20 vulnerabilities have been fixed in the new version none of which are considered critical issues that allow bypassing all levels of browser protection and executing code on the system outside of the sandbox.
Main novelties of Chrome 115
In this new version of Chrome 115 that is presented, it is highlighted that the Sidebar functionality has been improved and it is enabled for some users. And it is that a sidebar mode has been implemented that allows you to refine the information about the content of the page you're currently viewing, for example, you can submit search queries, see answers to questions related to the current page, and get more detailed information about the site. It is worth mentioning that the functionality has not been implemented to 100% of the users, since it will be enabled for a wider audience in the next version.
It is also worth noting that the ability to display in the sidebar the text of the search results selected on the main page and sent to the search engine by clicking on "Search Google" in the context menu.
Another of the changes that stands out from Chrome 115 is that now it is possible to display the page content in the sidebar in reading mode, in which only the relevant text on the page and all unrelated controls, banners, menus, navigation bars, and other parts of the page are displayed. To quickly activate the mode, an "Open in reading mode" link has been added to the context menu displayed for the selected text snippet.
Besides that, for some users, support for the ECH mechanism is enabled (Encrypted Client Hello), which continues the development of ESNI (Encrypted Server Name Indication) and is used to encrypt information about TLS session parameters, such as the requested domain name. The key difference between ECH and ESNI is that instead of encrypting at the individual field level, the entire TLS ClientHello message is encrypted in ECH. On Windows and Linux, ECH requires the "Secure DNS" setting to be active.
It is also highlighted in Chrome 115 that provided a display of information about how much memory was freed when dislodging a tab in "Memory Saver" mode. Memory saving mode allows you to significantly reduce RAM consumption by freeing up memory occupied by inactive tabs, allowing you to provide the necessary resources to process currently viewed sites in situations where other applications are running in parallel They consume a lot of memory in the system. When you switch to inactive tabs that have been evicted from memory, their content is automatically loaded. The mode is enabled in the "Performance / Save Memory" settings.
On the other hand, it has been expanded support for scroll-driven animation (Scroll-Guided Animation), with which, for example, you can create indicators to visually represent position on the page, or add effects that change content when it appears in the viewport on scroll.
Two modes are available for use: "ScrollTimeline" to bind to the scroll position relative to the coordinate axis and "ViewTimeline" to bind to the relative display scroll of individual content items in the scroll area.
As part of the Privacy Sandbox initiative, support for the "fencedframe" HTML element has been implemented . The new element resembles an "iframe" and also allows you to embed third-party content on the page. The differences boil down to limiting the interaction of inline content with page content at the attribute and DOM levels.
Of the other changes that stand out of this new version:
- The "display" CSS property allows multiple keywords at the same time.
- Added the ability to specify only the property name in CSS-style queries(), without specifying the value, which will cover all values that differ from the original ones.
- Improvements have been made to the web developer tools. Added experimental support for inspecting nested CSS grids ( subgrid ).
- Provided tooltip output with custom CSS property values.
- Implemented syntax highlighting of CSS files in SASS, SCSS, and LESS formats.
- Added “Ctrl + mouse click on line number in code editor” shortcut to quickly set conditional breakpoints.
