Chromium fixes the bug that prevented using the system theme on Linux. Functional dark mode from June

Chromium with the dark theme

I think that there are not a few Linux users who complain that we are not cared for in the same way as those of Windows or macOS. Without going any further, there is a version of Spotify for Linux that does not directly support the streaming music company, and warns that not all functions will be available as in the versions of Microsoft and Apple systems. It is also noticeable that we care less when browsers based on Chromium they have been able to use the dark theme since the option exists, and we have yet to pull some other trick to get the same behavior.

I've been timidly following this bug thread on bugs.chromium.org for a while now. Today, as I have done on other occasions, I have taken a look, and in theory the bug is already fixed and everything works on Chromium 114. Right now we are on browsers that are based on Chromium 111-112, so there are still two more to go. months to see if all this works or not. The version that should already change the theme together with the one we have chosen in the operating system is now in the Dev channel, and it can already be tested from Flatub.

Chromium with system theme on GTK and Qt

Now, considering how long they've been to fix this bug and having seen that it doesn't work in Qt, I'm still skeptical. In it bug tracking, in a message posted on April 10, mentions this:

Enabling WebUIDarkMode on Linux:

– Added DarkModeManagerLinux.
– Monitor dark mode preference from org.freedesktop.portal.Settings and GTK/QT.
– The portal preference takes precedence over the toolkit preferences.
– ChromeBrowserMainExtraPartsViewsLinux owns DarkModeManagerLinux.

If we do the test in GNOME/GTK, we will see that yes, the theme changes with the operating system, but not in Plasma/Qt. What I have not seen change automatically are the developer tools, and the page that shows the source code is also kept white, but it is a first step. This improvement should also be reflected in other browsers, such as Chrome, Opera and Vivaldi. I don't mention Brave because they applied their own solution long ago. To see the end result we will have to wait for june, when Chromium 114 arrives.
