A few weeks ago, one of the oldest video game companies in the world, Atari, made official its new game console and its upcoming launch, as well as its features and software that it will carry.
The most striking thing about all this was not only the launch of a new game console but the fact of including and using Gnu / Linux as the main operating system of the console.
This was striking because normally no game console usually has a Linux distribution or a proprietary operating system but an own operating system. But Atari holds even more surprises.
Recently, Atari has presented the joystick that will complement the game console. This joystick has a retro air, since it is oriented to the world of classic video games and for which it is adapted. But it is not the only thing that it adapts to. This joystick is interesting because it also is compatible with Gnu / Linux distributions. And it is still an accessory, so the fact that it is created for Linux becomes even more important if possible.
Atari's joystick targets the world of classic games
Currently, thanks to Gnome Games and emulators, any Gnu / Linux user can recreate the classics on their computer, but it is true that most of these users do not stop using the keyboard as the only control of the video game. This joystick is intended to be one more alternative, but an alternative that recreates the golden years of those video games.
The Atari joystick will first ship with the AtariBox console and later it will be distributed freely, for which we can use an AtariBox console or simply our computer with Gnu / Linux.
I don't know if 2017 will be the year of Linux on the Desktop, but it's certainly the year of the Linux video game. There are more and more recreations that use Gnu / Linux and multiplatform video games that take into account the penguin platform and that means that Gnu / Linux users do not have to leave the platform to go play.
This "boom" has not stopped and although 2017 is full of several samples and successes of video games for Gnu / Linux, in 2018 we will have more samples of it and possibly last throughout the year What do you think?
