Ataribox: the mythical Atari console is reborn

Ataribox

Everyone, even the youngest, will know the name of Atari, the mythical firm who lived a golden age in the world of video games. It became one of the largest independent video game production companies in the US, pioneering arcade video games. A whole empire of digital entertainment forged with great achievements and historical milestones that we all know, such as the Atari 2600 console, the 8-bit microcomputers like the Atari 800XL, followed by the 16-bit series like the Atari ST, which used Motorola 68k chips, or Atari Portfolio (first PDA compatible with PC XT), etc.

Also in the software world we find well-known names that came out of this factory, such as the video game Pong, Asteroids, Pac-man, Defender, or some more modern ones such as Unreal Tournament, Dragon Ball, Driver, etc. Well, the lovers of this firm are in luck, since An Atari console is back, it's the Ataribox of which we already know more data. Until recently there were only rumors or some news about her, but little information was known so far. Now, thanks to some sources such as VentureBeat, more secrets have been revealed of what this modernized entertainment center will be ...

In an interview for said medium, the creator of the console Feargal MacConuladh has advanced more details, and these are quite juicy. Surely you are wondering why this news in a medium about Linux and free software, well, the answer is simple, will use Linux as the operating system with remodeled interface to adapt to TVs. Yes, another Steam Machine! But I hope this one is more successful than Valve's. On top of that, the hardware will also be top-notch, with AMD chips (CPU and custom GPU) and a price that will be around between 200 and 300 dollars in the market. I suppose that when it arrives in Europe it will sell between € 200 and € 300 as is usually done in the industry, converting $ to € (something that hurts European buyers but the industry claims that it is compensation for exporting to the old continent ...).

Atari wants to raise enough money for funding, starting a campaign of crowdfounding for your project on Indiegogo. It will begin this fall and in a few months we will have the console on the market, since it seems that it will come out in the spring of next year. In addition, the idea is not only to compete with the PS4, Xbox One, Wii, or Steam Machine, but to recover some of the nostalgia and be able to run classic games of the firm on it. For this they will launch a new catalog of classic games for buyers, although they do not want to limit themselves to that, but also that it is capable of moving more modern video games such as Minecraft or Terraria, among others. Therefore, it will be a mix between modern and vintage.

It looks sensational, hopefully it will prosper because it would be a huge revolution both for the video game industry (as was the Atari 2600 at the time) and for the Linux world. Of course, they could sell it cheaper (€ 190/200 for example, would be ideal).
