Liberty Phone, the new smartphone from Purism

Liberty Phone

The Liberty Phone is the new Purism device with improvements

Few days ago Purism unveiled through a blog post, the launch of your new smartphone, "Liberty Phone", which comes with the PureOS Linux distribution, which uses the Debian package base and offers a GNOME-based responsive user environment for desktop and mobile devices (the application interface changes dynamically based on screen size and available input devices).

The environment allows working with the same GNOME applications both on the touch screen of a smartphone and on large screens in combination with a keyboard and mouse. The work of mobile applications is provided by the libhandy library, within which a set of widgets and objects is developed to create a user interface for mobile devices using GTK and GNOME technologies.

About Liberty Phone

the liberty phone has the same display, processor, cellular modem, and software support than other models. The main differences of the Liberty Phone are reduced to an increase in the size of the RAM from 3 to 4 GB and an increase in internal memory from 64 to 128 GB.

The Liberty phone is the upgraded version of our popular Librem 5 USA phone with Made in USA electronics. The Liberty Phone integrates 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

The Liberty Phone still uses a 5,7-inch display (IPS TFT) with a resolution of 720×1440, i.MX8M SoC with a Quad-core ARM64 Cortex A5 CPU3 (1,5GHz) and a Vivante GC7000Lite GPU, Wi-Fi 802.11 abgn, Bluetooth 4, a 4500 mAh battery and 8 and 13 megapixel cameras, it has a USB 3.0 Type C port, a 3,5 audio jack mm and a microSD card reader up to 2TB.

As already mentioned, the device comes with open source based firmware that gives the user full control over the device. To block attempts to track and collect information about the user, the device has hardware switches that allow you to disable the camera, microphone, GPS, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, and baseband module at the circuit break level.

The declared cost of the device is $2199, which is explained by the production of almost all electronic components in the United States under the control of Purism at all stages of production (with the exception of the Wi-Fi module made in India).

Local production allows to secure the supply chain and minimizes the risks of embedding back doors in the production stage under a contract with Chinese companies.

All of the electronics in the Liberty Phone are manufactured in our US facilities, and the entire phone is assembled in those same facilities, using the same manufacturing process that we used for the Librem 5 development kits in 2018 and the Librem Key that has the Made in the USA label started in 2019. By doing all electronics manufacturing, assembly, and fulfillment within the same facility, Purism is able to oversee every stage of production.

It is worth mentioning that Purism has done a lot for the mobile Linux ecosystem, since without the company's work, we wouldn't have the phosh user interface or much of the other software that allows you to run mainline linux on modern phones. And the company continues to support its phones with long-term regular software updates that make it more useful over time.

However, for many Purism has a history of charging high prices for its hardware to help subsidize the development of its hardware and software ecosystem. And honestly, it's kind of hard to imagine why anyone would spend $2,199 on such a (hardware) phone.

Personally, I can mention that as such the device is not intended for a general market, but for a specific one that is concerned about their privacy and that only those who really value the device's features will be the ones who purchase a device. .
