KDE Applications changes name to KDE Gear and arrives with April updates

Few days ago April Cumulative App Update Released (21.04) developed by the KDE project and in which as of this version, the consolidated KDE suite will now be released under the name KDE Gear, instead of "KDE Applications".

In total, as part of the April update, versions of 225 programs, libraries, and plugins have been released. Information on the availability of Live Assemblies with new versions of applications can be found on this page.

KDE Gear 21.04 Key New Features

Kontact's personal information manager capabilities have been expanded, covering applications such as an email client, a calendar planner, a certificate manager, and an address book. Calendar Planner can now send invitations to scheduled meetings and send alerts when the time of an event changes.

The mail client KMail adds support for the Autocrypt standard, which simplifies the encryption of correspondence through simple automatic configuration and key exchange without using key servers (the key is automatically transmitted on the first message sent).

The mail backend ensures that information about the senders of incoming letters is preserved, even if the user has not explicitly added them to the address book. The accumulated data is used to make recommendations when completing the address in a new letter.

The development of the KDE pathway of the travel assistant received improvements and in the new version the ability to determine the status of elevators and escalators on the map is added from the station, as well as use information from OpenStreetMap for information on operating time. In addition, the division on the map of types of bicycle rental points is provided (you can leave it in any parking lot or you need to return to the starting point).

We can also find improvements in the file manager Dolphin, as the ability to simultaneously unzip multiple files was added. The interface has a smooth animation of regrouping icons by splitting the viewport or resizing the window. When opening new tabs, it was possible to customize: open a tab immediately after the current tab or at the end of the list.

Built-in tools for working with Git, Mercurial, and Subversion repositories have added root directory definition of the working copy of the repository.

As long as you have the ability to change the content of context menus, for example, the user can remove obviously unnecessary items. A full list of settings and options can always be found in the hamburger menu displayed at the top right of the window.

Elisa adds support for playing audio files in AAC format and process playlists in .m3u8 format, including information on songs, artists, and albums specified in Cyrillic. Optimized memory consumption when scrolling and better integration of the mobile version with the Android platform.

Also added support for AV1 format in Kdenlive video editor and there was a simplified change of the scale of the tracks by dragging the sliders that appear at the ends of the horizontal scroll bar.

In Konsole a disabled adaptive text redistribution mode has been added when the window is resized. In addition, it provided sorting profiles by name, recycled dialog management and configuration profiles, increased visibility of text selection, given the opportunity to select an external editor, caused by Ctrl-clicking on the text file.

Kate now supports scrolling using touch screens. Added ability to display all TODO notes in project. We implement tools to perform basic operations in Git, such as viewing changes.

Finally, this new update will be arriving gradually to the different Linux distributions, so if it is not available for your distribution yet, you will need to have a little patience.

Although also, if you already want to test the changes of this update different components can be tested separately with the help of the technology of Flatpak packages.
