Does your car run on Linux?

Automotive Grade Linux

On many occasions we have talked about AGL (Automotive Grade Linux), a project that has several important collaborators from the electronics and motor industry to invest and develop in this global proposal for the connected cars of the present and of the future. The technologies want to be very present also inside the passenger compartment of the vehicles and with AGL they have a good opportunity to grow.

But… what about your car? Does it work thanks to linux? The truth is that there is not only AGL for the car. For example, Tesla Motors they use a Linux distribution that they develop themselves for their electric car models. Other firms also prefer to do something similar, based on Linux they create their own independent projects for whatever reason. So, maybe even if you don't use AGL, your car is using Linux for some of the systems it implements.

The vast majority of manufacturers rely on AGL rather than investing in developing their own free kernel-based system. Currently the platform has more than 140 members whichcollaborate with this project under the Linux Foundation. Dan Cauchy, the CEO of AGL, said that “Automakers are transforming themselves into software companies, and just like in the tech industry, they are realizing that open source is the way to go.«.

Which manufacturers are contributing the most to AGL and who are using it in their models? For among the most prominent members of the motor industry are Audi, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes, Hyundai, Subaru, Nissan, Suzuki and the automobile company largest on the planet: Toyota. Recently Volkswagen has also joined, which was already participating through Audi, which belongs to the group, but now it does so directly under this other brand.
