Today a week ago, Mozilla released Firefox 89. It was an important launch with a great design change, a more modern one in which they have also moved some things and eliminated others because it is what, according to what they have studied, most prefer. For example, I like it better, but I have read comments from people who say they don't like it at all or that the icons are harder to see. For those people, all is not lost, as some changes that were introduced by the redesign that has received the name of Proton.
At the beginning of the year, when we still did not know if the change would be activated in Firefox 90 or before, we write an article in which we explained how we could prove it. Almost all the changes of this type that we can make to browsers are hidden, such as "flags" in some Chromium-based browsers, in the "experiments" section in others such as Vivaldi or on the page about: config in Firefox. What is explained here is to make the way back.
Undo the path made by Proton since about: config
- We go to the address bar and write about: config.
- We accept the notice, unless we have already entered before and we have marked the box so that it does not warn us again.
- We search for "proton" and everything we can recover will appear. We have to change these values (double click or click on the double arrow on the right):
- browser.proton.contextmenus.enabled
- browser.proton.doorhangers.enabled.
- browser.proton.enabled.
- browser.proton.modals.enabled.
- browser.proton.places-tooltip.enabled.
- Finally, we restart Firefox.
This is still possible right now, but at some point Mozilla should remove those settings from the settings. Meanwhile, all those who hate the new design can have all the good things of Firefox 89 and future versions without having to suffer the new look of one of the most used non-Chromium-based browsers. At least for a while more.
