It's been a long time since WSL2, the second version of Windows Subsystem for Linux, available, but not for everyone and officially. This is something that will happen soon, since Microsoft is already prepared for its mass adoption, which means that it will be available to everyone and that it can be installed without having to make extra modifications. As of this writing, what is officially available is still its first version.
WSL2 will land alongside Windows 10 v2004. When the time has come and how do they explain here, Microsoft will update the kernel of its Windows Subsystem for Linux, something that they will do from its section or function specially designed for it that we can access from the Configuration / Update and security / Windows Update / Search for updates. In other words, we will go from WSL1 to WSL2 if we already have it activated and apply the pending updates.
WSL2 will arrive with an updated Linux kernel
For those of you who are reading about this for the first time, explain that the Windows Subsystem for Linux is a kind virtual machine that allows us run Linux terminal on Microsoft system. Among other things, from this terminal we can use tools as powerful as FFMPEG, as long as we install the necessary packages. Also, at least it works in WSL1, there are tools that also allow us to run Linux applications with user interface.
Windows 10 v2004 should arrive officially in may and, in addition to introducing WSL2, it will also include improvements such as temperature reports from the task manager, improvements in configuration management, improved experience for the tablet / PC function, improvements in searches and other novelties.
