WINE 6.20 introduces 398 changes and paves the way for Release Candidates

WINE 6.20

And although a lot of software keeps pulling older versions, like Guitar Pro 7 that makes use of WINE 3.20 if we install it via PlayOnLinux, a new stable version of this software is already on the horizon to run Windows applications on other operating systems. Last night in Spain He launched WINE 6.20, which will be one of the last (if not the last) development versions before releasing Release Candidates.

In 6.18 work began to support the HID joystick, something that was continued in 6.19, and in WINE 6.20 it will be the only joystick backend supported by WINE in the DirectInput code path. This week, the WineHQ developer team fixed 20 bugs and introduced a total of 398 changes. They are quite a few less than in the previous two weeks when they approached or exceeded 500, but quite a few more than on other occasions when they narrowly exceeded 200.

WINE 6.20 highlights

  • MSXml, XAudio, DInput and some other modules converted to PE.
  • Some system libraries have been included with the source code to support PE builds.
  • The HID joystick is now the only joystick backend supported in DirectInput.
  • Better support for MSVCRT builds in Winelib.
  • Various bug fixes.

WINE 6.20 can now be downloaded from this the latter other link. WineHQ also provides information to download this and future updates by adding the official repository for Linux here, but it can also be installed on macOS and Android. If the repository is added, you can choose between the stable, Staging or Dev versions.

As mentioned, we've already reached the point where Release Candidates will start rolling out soon, so next week could be the first week that an RC will be released. If this happens, the releases will become weekly, and the changes will focus on making everything work as well as possible for the stable version of WINE 7.0 taking place early next year.
