WINE 5.16 introduces AVX x86 logging support and continues to restructure console support

WINE 5.16

Two weeks have passed since the launch of the latest development version of WINE, which with the punctuality of its developers means that, if the world does not stop rolling, we already have a new one. This is also the development version WINE 5.16, a release that comes with only three outstanding novelties (plus the fourth and usual one that speaks of general corrections). The bad thing for Linux users is that, on top of that, one of them has arrived for macOS, Apple's desktop operating system.

But hey, anyone who follows the WineHQ modus operandi will know that they usually mention a very short list of highlights, but they also post all the changes they have made since the last version a little further down. In these two weeks they have corrected 21 bugs, at the same time that they have introduced a total of 241 changes. Yes, they are few if we compare them with the 400 that they have introduced on other occasions, but it all adds up. Here are the four changes that WineHQ has mentioned as the most important.

WINE 5.16 highlights

  • Support for AVX x86 registries.
  • Some ARM64 fixes for macOS.
  • Even more restructuring of the console support.
  • Various bug fixes.

Interested users can now install WINE 5.16 from its source code, available in this y this other link, or from binaries that can be downloaded from here. In the link from where we can download the binaries there is also information to add the official project repository to receive this and other future updates as soon as they are ready for systems such as Ubuntu / Debian or Fedora, but also for Android and macOS.

The next development version will be WINE 5.17 and, if there are no surprises, something that seems impossible to happen on the WineHQ agenda, the next September 11. Among the improvements that it will introduce, this time we can not say anything, beyond that they will introduce hundreds of small improvements and corrections as usual.
