Will we have Proton already in Firefox 89 or is Mozilla waiting for Firefox 90?

Proton activated in Firefox 89

At the end of January we talk to you of a redesign that Mozilla is preparing for its browser. His name is Proton, and what is intended is to modernize the image of Firefox. What is currently available in the stable version shows everything very flat, which also means that the edges have vertices. This is something that we do not see in the screenshot that you have above these lines. And no, the option has not been activated manually.

What you see is Firefox 89, more specifically its last nightly. Until a few days ago, both in the v88 and v89 beta we could activate the new design from about: config, but we had to do it on our own. I don't know when the default option was activated, but I have updated my Nighly version in Kubuntu, I have seen that the design has changed, I have downloaded the Nightly in Manjaro to confirm it and, in effect, we already have Proton.

Proton on Firefox 89 or 90?

If they don't back down, Proton will arrive in five weeks and four days, since the stable version of Firefox 88 will arrive on Tuesday the 20th and four weeks later will arrive Firefox 89. But one thing must be taken into account, or better two: Mozilla reserves the right to retain certain functions of which they are testing in the Beta and Nightly versions, a wildcard that they already used in Firefox 87 at not include AVIF image decoding in the news list. The other thing we have to take into account is the version number, and that is that Proton would be better as a novelty in the first launch after a change of ten.

In any case, I see likely that Mozilla includes the novelty in the beta, which is a more stable version than Nightly and can almost be used as the default browser. In little more than a month we could have a new design that will modify the address bar, the toolbox, the tab bar, the hamburger menu, the information bars and the drop-downs.
