We can now enjoy Linux Mint 18 KDE Edition

Linux Mint 18 KDE Edition

In the last few days the Linux Mint team has introduced us the eager Linux Mint 18 KDE Edition distribution. This official flavor of Linux Mint arrives late compared to the rest of the distributions due to the problems they have had with the desktop and with the startup manager, although we can say that it is already available for installation or update, whichever we prefer.

Linux Mint 18 KDE Edition comes out a month late compared to its official brother, Linux Mint 18 XFCE Edition, but the wait is worth it because it will be a distribution that have Plasma 5.6 as well as a repository that will update the desktop without having serious problems with the distribution.

Linux Mint 18 KDE Edition is based on Ubuntu LTS 16.04, as well as the main version and the rest of the official flavors of Linux Mint. In this case the flavor has Plasma 5.6 and with Linux kernel 4.4, LTS kernel that will give us, along with the base of the distribution, support until 2021. KDE is the main desktop of this flavor, although we find other Linux Mint tools such an updated Update Manager that improves the management of installations in the flavor, Mint Welcome that serves as a starting guide for novice users or Mint USB, a creator of installable USB's or pen drive formatter.

Linux Mint 18 KDE Edition will have Kubuntu backports enabled for better KDE performance

But in this version we find news such as the introduction of the SDDM boot manager, a startup manager that has had to be introduced for better management of sessions and other operating systems. A greater support for HiDPI displays, high definition displays such as those used in Apple or Dell computers. In this flavor, KDE lovers will also find support for the btrfs and exFAT filesystem, But also they will find the Kubuntu backports repository enabled to receive Plasma 5.6 and KDE security updates, which will make the version more secure and functional.

Lovers of Linux Mint KDE Edition surely already have this version through the updater, but if you want to try this new minty flavor, you can get the installation image through this link. It is usually a large distribution that is outperforming Kubuntu itself for its optimization, but it is also true that it usually takes a long time to update compared to other distributions that use KDE, something to be aware of.
