Wallabag, an open source alternative to Pocket

wallabag

Possibly many of you have recognized the Pocket application in the title of the post, an application oriented to readings for later or those applications that save articles or readings to read them whenever we want. Pocket does it very well at that, but very well. It is not surprising that it is already in all web browsers and that some like Mozilla Firefox include it as a basic functionality.

The problem of Pocket lies in that it is a non-free application, that is to say, all the data that we have, that we store, etc… belong to Pocket and are not ours. But this has a solution.

There is a totally free application that offers the same as Pocket, this application is called Wallabag. Wallabag is a software that allows us to store any reading or article on our server and that makes everything ours and we can manage it freely without depending on third parties. Wallabag is an application that can also function as Pocket, that is, it offers the same as if it were a third-party application, but it gives you the option of being able to install it on our personal server.

If we use docker, we can install Wallabag by typing in the terminal the following:

docker pull wallabag/wallabag

And if we have own server and we don't have docker, then we have to write the following:

git clone https://github.com/wallabag/wallabag.git
cd wallabag && make install

And once we have it installed, Wallabag can connect with our smartphone through an app on the Play Store and with our web browser through an official extension that has.

Wallabag allows us to take notes, store readings and even associate items with labels to better organize ourselves. The only problem or difference that exists with Pocket is that Wallabag is not as widespread as Pocket and in some devices such as eReaders, it is not present and Pocket is.

But if we look for a free alternative, Wallabag is one of the best options to Pocket, possibly better than other proprietary alternatives like Instapaper What do you think? Do you use Pocket or another service to save your readings online?

    For many months now, there has been the option of having Wallabag in Kobo brand eReaders. You just have to install what they have on GitHub and voila, your articles on your device.
