VLC 3.0.21 introduces option for D3D11 HDR and other minor changes

VLC 3.0.21

Without having done any survey, I think that there are many of us who want VideoLAN to announce once and for all the VLC 4 that they presented in 2020. It will arrive with a renewed user interface that is a bit reminiscent of the mobile version of the player, but while we wait they continue releasing minor versions to improve what exists. The most recent, VLC 3.0.21, has not been announced yet, but can be downloaded from their server.

VLC 3.0.21 has arrived about six months after the previous version adding an AMD VQ Enhancer filter and a D3D11 option which allows using NVIDIA TrueHDR to generate content from SDR sources, Super Resolution scaling with AMD GPUs and support for HTTP content range management according to RFC 9110.

VLC 3.0.21 will officially arrive soon

It is known that VLC 3.0.21 has also fixed several bugs to improve ASS subtitle rendering, Opus decoding in MP4, VA-API hardware decoding with some drivers, and adaptive HSL streaming in audio-only mode. Among other new features, FFmpeg has been updated to version 4.4.4, dav1d 1.4.2 and libvpc 1.14.1.

At the time of writing, the release of VLC 3.0.21 is not yet official. VideoLAN has not published any announcement or release notes, but you can now download the tarball of the software from the button that you will find at the bottom of this article. In the next few hours they will update their packages snap, flatpack and it will also begin to reach the official repositories of the different Linux distributions.

Regarding the next big update There is no news about the possible arrival of VLC 4.0. What you can do is test its beta version using its snap package, something that we have explained in an article of this medium. It is totally safe, since it does not touch the version of the official repositories and can be easily uninstalled.
