vkBasalt - Vulkan Post Processing Layer for Linux

vkBasalt Vulkan

There are already several projects around the powerful Vulkan graphical API. This graphical API is now under Khronos, but it came about based on code released by AMD from its closed source Mantle project. However, it has currently given great joy to gamers and other graphics programs that need such an API to draw graphics.

One of those projects is vkBasalt, allowing you to add fancy effects for Linux video game graphics. It is a post-processing implementation for Vulkan that improves graphical results. A new version that brings some improvements to this program with the release of 0.3.1.

Maybe it only has a small number of features at the moment, and this update has not brought much. But the truth is that it is quite useful for toggle effects on and off during runtime with quite great results as you can see in the image with and without vkBasalt. The changes are evident, with Adaptive Sharpening contrast, Fast Aproximate Anti-Aliasing, Enhanced Subpixel Morfological Anti-Aliasing, Deband / Dithering, 3D Color LookUp Table, etc.

In addition to making snapshots easier, there's also the ability to control debug output, an updated shader compiler, etc. In addition, it can also be used together with Proton on the Steam Play client for video games from Valve's online store.

Little by little new features will be added with the next versions, and although now it is only a project in a fairly early stage of development, surely in a while it will be much better and vkBasalt will have something to talk about… No matter how small the projects around Vulkan are, it is always good to see new features for graphics and gaming for GNU / Linux.

You can to install manually compiling the code that you will find on the official page at GitHub. Also some distros have it in their repositories to install it more easily.
