Vivaldi becomes the first web browser in Android Automotive on the Polestar 2

Recently the news broke that Vivaldi Technologies (the developer of the Vivaldi browser) and Polestar (a Volvo subsidiary that makes Polestar electric vehicles) have announced the first version Assessment Vivaldi browser for operating system platform Android Automotive.

The navigator is available for installation in infotainment centers and will ship by default on Polestar 2 premium electric vehicles.

Vivaldi's in-car infotainment edition includes all the standard features found in Vivaldi for Android, including ad blocking and anti-tracking, built-in translator, and cross-device syncing.

When premium electric car company Polestar approached us earlier this year to explore bringing our navigator to Polestar 2's innovative infotainment system, the answer was obvious.

A browser is both a prime request from Polestar drivers and completely new to the platform. Until now, there simply wasn't a browser available on Android Automotive, the operating system that powers Polestar 2's in-car infotainment system.

Notably for obvious security reasons, in this version of the browser the developers have made some changes to the browser.

Of which the main security measures taken (and to avoid accidents) in particular, the ability to browse the web will be available only in parking mode, And if the driver starts to move while watching a video, all video streams will automatically switch to the audio channel.

Developed for the Polestar 2 by the Vivaldi team in Norway, the app brings full browser functionality to the car's 11-inch center screen. Vivaldi here works similar to how it would on a mobile device, with tabbed browsing, streaming capabilities, online shopping, and the best security measures.

Our focus on flexibility and feature set is alive and well in this new context too, with a built-in ad blocker, privacy-friendly translation tool, notes feature, tracking protection, and encrypted sync functionality coming. ready to use.

In addition to this, another of the changes that was made in this version of the browser also for security reasons, is in the function of downloading files from the network, which is disabled in the Vivaldi browser for Polestar 2.

“We've listened to our community of owners, and it's great that we were able to respond to their wish for a Vivaldi navigator as a nice Christmas present,” says Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar. "Now there is basically no limit to the web content you can explore on Polestar 2, even some of your favorite streaming platforms."

Today, we are proud to present Vivaldi with a car for the first time and specifically with a brand like Polestar. Our technology and sustainability ambitions are well aligned. We value transparency, privacy, and responsible innovation (including the fact that we have our servers in Iceland, one of Polestar's newer markets). And, like Polestar, we are a challenging brand that takes a Scandinavian approach to design, one built on trust and listening to users.

Of the key features of the browser Vivaldi for Polestar 2 the following are mentioned:

  • Browse and manage tabs efficiently.
  • Stream content (audio only if driving).
  • Online store.
  • Use an ad blocker.
  • Establish follow-up prevention.
  • Access translation tools.
  • Use the Notes tool.
  • Synchronize devices (end-to-end encryption).
  • Use private browsing (data is not stored or shared with Polestar).
  • Receive operating system updates (just like Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android devices).
