Vim: reasons to love him

Vim text editor on Linux

The famous Vim editor that you all know has many defenders and some detractors. As I always say, everything is a matter of taste and comfort. Those who feel comfortable with other text editors will not be so willing to defend Vim against their favorite editor and those who see and enjoy the virtues of Vim will appreciate it. Anyway, as with distros and desktop environments, there is a kind of war between these editors ...

Vim stands for Vi IMproved, is an improved version of the vi text editor for UNIX systems. Its author is Bram Moolenar and it was presented for the first time in 1991, since then the experience has improved and to this day this fantastic text editor has remained. As I said in the first paragraph, you may have another favorite editor, in fact my favorite editor is not Vim.

Moolenar acquired a Friend computer in the late 80's and wanted to continue using the UNIX editor that he had been working with until then, but the available clones of vi for Amiga did not like it. That's why he got down to work and in 1988 he started writing his own editor based on the vi clone known as Stevie. Since that date, many improvements have been implemented, transforming it into one of the main text editors today. Robert Webb implemented a graphical user interface for Vim in 1996, so it can be used graphically since then.

And now to what was going on in this article, the advantages or benefits of Vim to love it are:

  • Color schemes for text, which always helps for syntax correctness when you use it for programming.
  • You don't need to put your hands off the keyboard while working with it, as it does not need the mouse.
  • Inherit the best of Vi.
  • By vimscript
  • The fantastic plugins that extend the functionality of the editor. They even allow you to integrate Git or your favorite VCS with Vim.
  • The community behind Vim is very active and ready to answer your questions ...

I would add other advantages or benefits that are known

    * Vi / vim or its variants are installed by default on most Unix-like systems (Linux, * BSD) or Unix.

    * It is multiplatform (Linux, Mac OS X, Windows).

    * Many of today's tools are inspired by vi / vim, example vimperator for firefox or vimium for google-chrome, which help to navigate without the need for the mouse.

    * Short and easy to remember keyboard shortcuts.

    * Do complex tasks with few movements.

    * It is used in system administration.

    * Sharpen your memory, among many advantages it has ...

It takes some practice to get comfortable with vim, and the best way to get started is by running vimtutor in the terminal, then spending some time getting fluent.

I am pleased that you dedicate an entry to such a legendary editor of the * nix world as vim.
