Unity is now also available for Arch Linux

Unity on Arch Linux

Who was going to tell me, with how bad I had it with Unity in 2010, that things were going to change so much 12 years later. After being abandoned by Canonical, who went with GNOME for its main release, a young developer thought it was a good idea to resurrect it and started working on Ubuntu Unity Remix. Last October, coinciding with the launch of the Kinetic Kudu family, that remix ceased to be a remix to become an official flavor, and it seems that the desktop is experiencing a second youth.

A few hours ago, the young Rudra posted on Twitter what you have below these lines. He mentioned himself from the official Ubuntu Unity account, and we all knew what was going to happen and when, but not exactly how. Saraswat is an official member of Canonical, but his versatility never ceases to amaze him, he is an all-rounder who has responded to the community by doing what they asked him to: upload an installer to install, despite the redundancy, Unity in Arch Linux and any system based on it.

Unity is available in AUR

So what's cooking in my kitchen? A sample. Big announcement tomorrow!

Available from today in AUR, the package is called unity-installer-arch, and is maintained by rs2009 (initials of Rudra Saraswat and the year of his birth, I). The version is Unity 7.0.6, the one that published by May and that it was the first major launch of the desktop in six years. It is also the version used by Ubuntu Unity 22.10 Kinetic Kudu.

Because it's in the AUR, it needs to be compiled to install it, which can be done with yay. It is worth choosing the rust option for loading, and when you ask us, choosing the "Install Unity desktop" option. Keep in mind that it will only work if you choose the LightDM session manager.

If that is the year of your birth, then you are 13 years old.
