Unity 7.6, the first desktop update since 2016 can now be tested

Unity 7.6

The truth is that available since the same April 21, in which Ubuntu 22.04 and all the official flavors also arrived, but the young developer, Rudra Saraswat, had not published anything on social networks until a few hours ago. Canonical began the development of Unity for use on both desktop and mobile devices, but it did not turn out as expected, it returned to GNOME and even left Ubuntu Touch in the hands of UBports. A young Indian, Rudra Saraswat, decided to resurrect that hated by many version of Ubuntu, and has recently released Unity 7.6 beta.

Unity 22.04 didn't include Unity 7.6, but Saraswat says that It will arrive soon. For those who want to try it now, you can do it from Jammy Jellyfish, as long as you pull the terminal, add the repository and the keys. Although we are going to write here everything necessary, if we take into account that it will arrive sooner or later, I would only recommend it for those who want to try Unity 7.6, but not on production computers.

What's New in Unity 7.6

  • The dash (application launcher) and HUD have been redesigned to give them a modern and elegant look.
  • Fixed app info and ratings in dash preview.
  • Fixed “Empty Trash” button in dock (now uses Nemo instead of Nautilus).
  • Migrated the entire Unity7 shell source code to GitLab and got it to compile on 22.04.
  • The design is much flatter but keeps the blur of the whole system.
  • Dock menus and tooltips have a more modern look.
  • Low graphics mode works much better now and dash is faster than ever.
  • RAM usage in Unity7 is slightly lower now, while RAM usage has dropped substantially to about 700-800 MBs in Ubuntu Unity 22.04.
  • Fixed independent testing Unity7 launcher (this will help Unity7 contributors).
  • Error checking has been disabled and the build time is much shorter (this will help Unity7 contributors).

Saraswat explains:

Unity 7.6 will be the first major release of Unity in 6 years (last release was May 2016). We have restarted active development of Unity7 and will release new versions with more features regularly. You can test it by running the following commands on Ubuntu Unity 22.04 (we will also roll it out to existing Ubuntu Unity 22.04 users, if you don't add the test PPA):

Port
sudo wget https://repo.unityx.org/unityx.key sudo apt-key add unityx.key echo 'deb https://repo.unityx.org/main testing main' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/unity-x.list sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install -y unity

Unity 7.6 beta was announced on April 21, and Ubuntu Unity 22.04 arrived with Unity 7.5.1. The new version of the desktop is still not available, but Saraswat has promised that it will arrive in the near future.
