In April of last year, we in the Linux community had two big releases: GNOME 40 and GTK4. Fedora didn't think twice and did what it always does, which is to add the latest version of the software available to its operating system. Canonical thought it was too soon to make a leap, in fact two big ones, so it stuck with GNOME 3.38 and made the changes more patiently. At some point I had to return to normality, and that normality will come along with the release of Ubuntu 22.04.
Like Fedora, Ubuntu has always used the latest version of GNOME in its operating system, except for the last two releases to prevent its operating system from becoming a bit buggy. GNOME 40 was a huge jump, and with the jump already made in Impish Indri, the jump from GNOME v40 to v42 isn't much in comparison. So in the Daily Build they are already using GNOME 42, and rare is the case in which an operating system takes steps backwards, and less so when we are just a month away from the release of the stable version.
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish will arrive on April 21
In addition to the new version of GNOME, which is currently using the beta, there are other interesting changes. For example, from the appearance settings we can change the accent color. By default it will continue to be orange, but you can choose other colors such as red or purple. If we do, they will change, for example, the selection bands or the color of the Nautilus folders, as well as the software center (Snap Store). In addition, and without installing extensions or entering anything in the terminal, we can convert the panel into a dock as in the header screenshot, and the icons, such as the personal folder, appear at the bottom right from the start, and not at the top. the left as in Impish Indri and earlier.
Nor does it cease to attract attention are already using the new logo, as you can see in the screenshot, from the “About” section, and what appears while the operating system is starting; they are not using it yet official website. Whether we like it or not, we will have to start getting used to it. And one more thing, at least of those that I have noticed, in the top right menu, when choosing an option, such as the shutdown option, a menu is now displayed in a different color, instead of appearing all the same Colour.
Ubuntu 22.04 will arrive on next April 21, and it will be an LTS version with many new features, so it will be worth updating on the same day.
