UbuntuStudio 22.10. The ideal distribution for content creators.

Ubuntu Studio is a distribution focused on multimedia production.

After 4 months of not having my main computer I got it back. And, the first thing I did was install Ubuntu Studio Kinetic Kudu. After abstinence using it again confirmed my opinion that se is the ideal distribution for content creators. And, in this post I explain why.

Of course, what follows is just my opinion. I do not intend to tell anyone what to think and I understand that there are people who consider other alternatives better.

Why Ubuntu Studio 22.10 is ideal

In general Linux distributions come with the same programs and are built with the same components. But, in some cases the end result is greater than the sum of the components. Although this version of Ubuntu Studio does not bring major new features, it is much more solid and fluid than the previous ones. I can't define what it is, but it certainly works better.

Every time Ubuntu and its derivatives begin a new development cycle, it is inevitable to come across an email from Erich Eickmeyer, leader of the Ubuntu Studio project, raising a complaint or proposing a change. One comes to fear that there will not be a new version. But, finally it arrives and it is better than the previous one.

If I have to summarize what I like here is a short list:

KDE Plasma

Again I am going to say something subjective. From the renewal of desktops that occurred from 2010, KDE fared better than GNOME.  Henry Ford is credited with ensuring that he would give people any car they wanted, as long as they wanted it black and with a four-door. Definitely deciding what the user wants without consulting them provides a more consistent user experience with fewer errors. But, if I wanted them to decide for me what I should use, I would buy a Mac.

KDE is highly configurable and its ecosystem of applications is great. Discover vastly outperforms the insufferable GNOME Software Center, and KDE Connect is much better than proprietary alternatives for exchanging information on mobile. I'm not a fan of desktop customization, but if one day I want to do it, I know I have a tool that makes it easy for me to download options.

Low latency kernel.

The computer does not run multiple tasks at the same time. What it does is alternate them in such short periods of time that it is imperceptible to the user. On low latency kernels like the ones Ubuntu Studio 21.10 uses tasks are not divided equally, but priority is given to what is related to multimedia.

An interesting experience is to reproduce a radio station on the Internet and over the air. In normal kernel distributions the radio will play the content before the computer, while in a low latency kernel distribution the audio from the computer will preempt the radio.

Ubuntu Studio 22.10 Applications

Ubuntu Studio 22.10 doesn't have different apps than other distributions, But, it saves you the trouble of having to search for it in the repositories. It even has some that one wouldn't associate with a multimedia-focused distribution like LibreOffice's math formula editor. Although on second thought, there is also a math video podcast. Some programs included are:

  • Kdenlive: The online video editor from the KDE project.
  • OBS Studio: THE TOOL (Caps are intentional) for streaming live video using the most popular streaming services.
  • The Gimp: The most complete open source image editor could not be missing.
  • Ardour: Complete editor for working with audio files.
  • Scribus. A desktop post creator.
  • FreeShow: The great novelty of this version. It is a presentation creator designed to show the lyrics of the songs in religious ceremonies.
  • Darktable: Image post-processing.

I insist once again that this is a subjective comment. There are other distributions focused on multimedia production that you may like better than Ubuntu Studio 22.10. Or, if you're not a regular content producer, you might find traditional distribution more useful. The advice of always. Don't mind me, take the test.
