Although there is still plenty left for the Ubuntu Mate 16.10 release, it has been announced that this next version will consume less Ram memory than Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.
This is undoubtedly great news, since not everyone can afford to have a very powerful computer to run RAM-intensive operating systems, so the fact that there are operating systems that reduce it is good news. In addition, an operating system that consumes few resources will always be able to offer good performance, regardless of the equipment you have.
Ubuntu Mate is not the only software in which RAM consumption has been reduced, as more and more development companies are trying optimize computers so that they use less and less RAM without losing performance. The best example is the Firefox browser, a browser that in 2012 ate 2 Gigs of Ram with a couple of windows open, but now consumes half that amount with better performance.
The truth is that it seems incredible that performance is improved but less and less RAM is consumed. In the case of Ubuntu Mate 16.10 has been achieved thanks to the implementation of GTK3 on the Mate 1.14.1 desktop which will be included in this operating system. Instead, Ubuntu Mate 16.04 LTS uses Mate 1.12.1, which still uses GTK2, which consumes more memory than GTK3.
More changes are also obviously in the works, among which we have changes in the command console handlings and an improvement in the DNS servers of the operating system.
Ubuntu Mate 16.10 is still in pre-alpha release, so a lot can happen between now and October. However, let's hope that the RAM and GTK3 is fulfilled, since lower consumption is always appreciated.
To open your mouth, you can download the current stable version, Ubuntu Mate 16.04 LTS, being able to do it from this link.
It is very good because it is newer gtk3 technology and if it is optimized to consume less ram, excellent that means that it will consume less memory than gnome shell but using the same libraries I suppose
